Maui Yoga with Carmen combines meditative and relaxation techniques with stretching postures to give you a complete workout--mind, body, and spirit. Emphasis is placed on core strengthening, improving mobility of the joints, particularly building strength into the shoulders and hips, and maintaining the pliability of the spine to open communication with the central nervous system.Alignment, in any posture, opens the energy channels in the body. Think of a water hose with a kink in it--no water flows. It is precisely for this reason that we practice yoga: To increase energy flow throughout the body. Not only are we interested in the quality of the energy channels themselves (the ability to expand and contract), but also the quality of content (fresh blood supply, i.e., oxygen and nutrients) which can then reach deep into the muscles, tissues, and cells to cleanse and nourish the entire system.
Which brings us to the concept of LOVE: When we think of archetypal love, the first image that comes to mind is a mother with an infant at her breast. The action of nursing. On a physical level, nourishment is love; and so it is on the three afore mentioned levels. Eventually we have to do this "act of nourishment" for ourselves and for others. In the context of Yoga, we nourish our bodies by breathing deeply so that our cells, tissues, organs, etc. receive ample amounts of oxygen and nutrients. Breathing, therefore, is an act of love. So...let us love our bodies which each inhalation. And with each exhalation may we extend this love to others.
